Overview
“NOISE” is Part 1 of MacLeay’s international multi-artist project “The Choir of Discontent”. It deals with the disruptive influence on our brains of the billions of online messages sent daily around the world and how this constant flood of messages has the potential to numb our ability to concentrate and think clearly and creatively about subjects of pertinence to both us and society as a whole. Relevance requires informed understanding, which in turn requires calm settings conducive to reflection. It is simply impossible for us to maintain a healthy mental state open to unimpaired exploration of relevant social and personal issues when we are plugged into such a huge number of individuals, corporations and political interests worldwide expressing themselves more or less honestly on serious as well as nonesensical themes every minute of every day on our mobile phones and computers. The algorithms that manage messaging on social media tend to render our interactions addictive and it is the author’s view that the resulting mass of messaging noise is contributing to a deterioration of the human condition.
“NOISE” is a continuation of series of vignettes that began with the film “Can’t Figure It Out” that deal with varying degrees of paranoia and confusion resulting from misinterpreted messaging and chance encounters and events.
